How Far Can The Electric Bike Travel?

Whether you are new to e-biking or have been using an electric bike for some time, you have probably wondered to yourself, “How far can an electric bike go?”. Well, the answer is not as simple as you might think.

The electric bike range can be affected by numerous factors. Anything from the size and weight of the rider to the terrain, to the wind and weather conditions can have an effect on how far an electric bike can go on one single charge.

Another question you may have is, “How long does an electric bike battery last?” Below, we answer both of these questions and provide some insightful information into the world of electric bike range.

How Far Can A Single Charge Take Me?

To determine the range of an electric bike battery, you first need to look at the capacity of the battery. It is usually measured in Watt hours (Wh), but sometimes you will see one which is measured in volts and amp hours, such as an e-bike with a 48V 10Ah battery.

Ezy Bike batteries are 36volt 10.4Ah Lithium-ion and are linked to an advanced battery management system (BMS). Our Lithium-ion batteries do not develop ‘memory’ and a life of 500 charges can be expected. Charging from almost depleted to 100% can take between 4 to 8 hours.

With these batteries, your electric bike battery has a range of between 30 to 50km on a single charge, which is ideal for those who have plans for a commute to and from work, or who might want to spend the day riding around a local park.

What Factors Can Affect Ebike Range?

Now that you know the ebike range for a single charge, you are probably wondering what factors can affect this. You will need to consider the total load, which includes the rider and the gear, as this could impede the ride speed and pedal capacity.

The size of the battery will also provide you with more or less power, which will affect how far you can go. You should also consider the age of your electric bike battery. While ebike batteries can work for years, the older they become, the harder it is for them to hold a charge. If you find that a single charge is not providing you with the same mileage, then it might be time to look for a new battery.

Another factor to consider is the pedal capacity of the electric bike. If you use a pedal assisted system, you can combine your own power with the power of the ebike for a longer ride. If you rely solely on the power of the battery, you might find your capacity running out quicker.

Luckily, Ezy Bike has included the power of the throttle, as well as the pedal assist system, in our bikes.Throttles a burst of power to climb a hill, or safely getting through an intersection, helping you to improve the electric bike range.

Battery Size Versus Motor Power

The size of your battery and the power of your motor can also have an impact on how far an electric bike can go. These two elements need to be a good match in order to achieve the optimal range.

Ideally, you should have a battery capacity in Watts that is equivalent to the motor capacity in Watts. This means that the motor will not strain the battery and will allow you to ride with the most amount of power you can possibly muster. If you have this type of arrangement, you should be able to achieve one full hour of assistance while riding.

Remember Riding Conditions

An important factor for ebike battery range is the riding conditions. For example, if you are going to be riding along a hilly or rocky path with a lot of twists and turns, then you will find that your range and power drops. This is especially true if you are using an ebike that is designed for in-town commuting, rather than off-road biking.

If you have a heavier ebike that is designed for exploring mountain roads, but also use it for daily commutes, you will find that your range is extensive. Be sure to look at the riding conditions of any journey before you head out, as this could affect the distance you can achieve on one charge. Remember to always choose the right gear when riding up a hill.

The function of the ebike is also a vital consideration for how far an electric bike can go. An ebike with fat tyres has a shorter range due to having more resistance and a larger surface area. Electric bikes that are used for beach riding will also have lower range because of the thicker tyres.

Thin-wheeled city bikes will have the longest range because of their decreased tyre thickness and frame weight. Also, if you will be cycling without any assistance, the range will diminish to as far as you can go before you become tired. Knowing what you will be using the ebike for, and what it was designed for, will help to gauge the electric bike range.

Enjoy The Ride

So, to answer the burning question of, “How far can an electric bike go?” we must look at a variety of elements. A single charge can take you a distance between 30 to 50km, depending on the battery type and battery management system.

The factors to look at include weight of the rider and any gear, the size and age of the battery, and whether or not you use a throttle as well as a pedal assist system. Riding conditions and the function of the bike itself also play a role in the range of your ebike.
